Commuters welcome recent upgrades to Bellville PTI

20 April 2023

The City of Cape Town recently completed some upgrades to the Bellville public transport interchange (PTI). These upgrades were confined to the minibus-taxi section. Earlier today, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas, visited the PTI to see how the recent upgrades are benefiting commuters and to liaise with commuters about their mobility experience.

'From what I saw today commuters and minibus-taxi operators are benefiting from safer access to the Bellville PTI. For this I am grateful as the Bellville Public Transport Interchange is one of the busiest facilities in Cape Town, serving thousands of commuters daily and ensuring safety for commuters is a key priority for us. The new fence assists to ensure manageable flow and eases the congestion at the facility. A safer and more orderly public transport facility in Bellville was the goal and I believe we have achieved this,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

The upgrades that were successfully completed at the Bellville PTI include:

  • The construction of new layer works for the roadway and holding area
  • Road resurfacing and fresh road markings
  • Fencing to improve security at the PTI
  • Sidewalks for pedestrians
  • A new underground closed stormwater system

'I am also pleased to note the new underground closed stormwater system has been constructed ahead of the winter rains as this closed system will aid the drainage within the upgraded holding and drop and go areas, meaning minimized ponding water, allowing for the maximum use of these areas,' said Councillor Quintas.

The City of Cape Town would like to thank the commuters and minibus-taxi operators for their patience and cooperation while the upgrade project was under way.
